Monitoring programs

Ecological Horizons recognise the value of consistent, long-term and strategic ecological monitoring for detecting impacts associated with landuse, (including mining and grazing impacts), management actions and climate change.

Ecological Horizons have been instrumental in designing, implementing and analysing the long-term ecological monitoring programs for the Arid Recovery, Tetepare Island Protected Area, Middleback Alliance and Warru Recovery projects. Many of these monitoring programs have now been in operation for over 15 years. Ecological Horizons also has extensive experience in designing and implementing fauna impact monitoring programs for mining companies.

Threatened Species Management & Recovery Plans

Ecological Horizons have written national recovery plans for species such as the plains mouse and black-footed rock wallaby. They have designed and implemented threatened species reintroductions and/or monitoring programs for the greater bilby, burrowing bettong, numbat, woma python, black-footed rock wallaby, western barred bandicoot , sandhill dunnart, western quoll, brushtail possum and stick-nest rat. Both directors are members of national threatened species recovery teams.

Reintroduction programs

The directors of Ecological Horizons have extensive experience in all aspects of fauna reintroduction including planning and translocation proposals, permits and approvals, translocation and monitoring, and reporting and research. We have reintroduced a range of species including western barred bandicoots, bilbies, burrowing bettongs, numbats, western quolls, stick-nest rats, black-flanked rock wallabies and woma pythons. Ecological Horizons has worked with organisations such as Arid Recovery, APY Land Management and the South Australian Dept for Environment, Water and Natural Resources to successfully reintroduce a range of species back into their former range.

Ecological Horizons has also partnered with the University of NSW to reintroduce threatened mammal species back to NSW. The Wild Desert project is based in Sturt National Park and will include fenced exclosures and unfenced expansion areas.
